Birth & early life

Born at Burton, near Kendal, on the 30th of May 1820.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Manchester on the 28th of December 1841.

Age: 21.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: None shown.

Appearance: Fair complexion. Blue eyes. Fair hair.

Service

From Private to Corporal: 5th of June 1844.

Corporal to Sergeant: 9th of February 1847.

Appointed to Troop Sergeant Major on the 11th of August 1852.

Reduced to Private by a Regimental Court-martial on the 28th of January 1854.

Embarked for the Crimea aboard the H.T. "Medora" on the 27th of April 1854.

Sent to Scutari on the 11th of October and rejoined the regiment on the 29th of October 1854.

He is shown on a nominal roll of men of the regiment at the Cavalry Depot, Scutari, made out on the 9th of November 1855, as being On Duty there from the 25th of February.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

From Private to Corporal: 1st of April 1859.

Reduced to Private by a Regimental Court-martial on the 22nd of August 1859.

Sent to England on the 1st of January 1860.

To Canterbury Depot from Chatham on the 14th of April 1860.

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "Free, by claim, with right of registry for a deferred pension of 6d. per day on attaining the age of 50 years", from Canterbury on the 9th of May 1860.

Served 19 years 186 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year 11 months

In India: 3 years 3 months.

Conduct: "very good".

In possession of three Good Conduct badges.

Twice tried by Court-martial.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal with three clasps, and the comment: "Is also entitled to, but has not yet received, the Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India."

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Inkerman and Sebastopol.

Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India.

To live in Manchester after discharge, but he later lived at Church Bank, near Burton, Westmoreland.
