1493, Private Joseph WHITBY — 4th Light Dragoons

Birth & early life

Born at Lichfield, Staffordshire.

He was probably a brother of1508 James Whitby, 4th Light Dragoons. The fact that both were born in Lichfield, the 1841 Census, and their ages on enlistment all support this view.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Lichfield on the 9th of July 1851.

Age: 21.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: Servant.

Service

Tried by a District Court-martial at Ipswich on the 23rd of August 1852 for "desertion, and losing his necessaries." Sentenced to 84 days' imprisonment with hard labour.

Slightly wounded in the Charge and sent to Scutari on the 3rd of November 1854.

Died, "in the General Hospital", on the 25th of February 1855.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava and Sebastopol.

Death & burial

Died, "in the General Hospital", on the 25th of February 1855.
