Birth & early life

Born in the parish of St. James's, Norwich.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Norwich on the 28th of December 1843.

Age: 18 years 3 months.

Height: 5' 10".

Trade: None.

Fair complexion. Brown eyes. Lt. brown hair.

Service

Sent to Scutari on the 27th of October and rejoined the regiment on the 3rd of December 1854.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Newbridge on the 21st of July 1863.

"Unfit for further service. Pericorditis -,suspected Aneurism. Disability is the result of service. Did not exist before enlistment otherwise he could not have served nearly twenty years with such a disease existing. Wasting of the muscles of the left arm — frequent fainting spells — loss of voice, and a cough. Quite unfit now, and will continue so, to contribute towards his livelihood."

Served 19 years 180 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year 10 months.

Aged 37 years 8 months on discharge.

Ten times entered in the Regimental Defaulters' book. Never tried by Court-martial.

Pension letters sent until the 4th of January 1888 when his pension was doubled, but there is no indication what the original amount was.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma and Sebastopol.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean and Turkish medals.

His Turkish medal is said by Lummis and Wynn to be in the Royal Norfolk Regimental Museum at Norwich, but the Curator states that this is not so.

Life after service

He attended the funeral of Bugle-Major Thomas Armes at Norwich on the 25th of January 1885.
