Birth & early life

Enlistment

Enlisted at Hounslow on the 2nd of June 1854.

No other enlistment details are shown.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 29th of April 1855.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. Great Britain on the 8th of October 1857.

From Private to Corporal: 1st of April 1858.

The musters for July-September 1858 show him as being "On Detachment at Sholapoore" during the whole of the period.

Served in action against the rebels at Zeerapore on the 29th of December 1858 and at Baroda on the 1st of January 1859.

Corporal to Sergeant: 8th of March 1860.

Returned to England on the 4th of February 1861.

Appointed to Troop Sergeant Major on the 31st of March 1863.

Returned to Sergeant on the 26th of June 1864.

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "time expired", from Aldershot on the 1st of June 1866.

Conduct: "Very good. Would have been in the possession of two Good Conduct badges if not promoted."

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Mutiny medal without clasp.

Life after service

1881 Census

103 Upper Stone Street, Maidstone, Kent.

The 1881 Census shows a man of this name lodging in the household of Hannah Barber. He was aged 46, unmarried, born Hereford, a "Printer". [RM]

Death & burial

His death is recorded at the age of 49 in the March Quarter of 1884 in the Maidstone registration district.
