Born at Burley, near Southampton, Hampshire, and was christened in St. Thomas's church, Portsmouth, on the 17th of July 1835, the son of George Wells and his wife, Mary Ann, nee Smith.

Discharged from Peshwar on the 18th of October 1861 at "Own request. Did not wish to transfer to the British Indian Forces."
Served in Central India under Sir Hugh Rose in the operations at Ghanzi, Calpe or Gwalior.
