1368, Private Henry WARREN - 17th Lancers

Birth & early life

Born at Stanton Drew, near Bristol, c.1834.

Enlistment

Enlisted into the 17th Lancers at Cork on the 27th of November 1854. He had previously served in the 2nd Somerset Militia from the 31st of March 1853. Regimental. No. 982.

Age: 20.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Labourer.

Features: Fresh complexion. Grey eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Leaving Dublin on the 20th of June 1855, he joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 15th of July.

Sent to St. George's Monastery Hospital on the 31st of October 1855, sent to Scutari General Hospital on the 7th of November and rejoined the regiment (from the pay of the 12th Lancers) on the 18th of January 1856.

Transferred to the Military Train at Dublin on the 17th of October 1857. Regimental. No. 845.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from the Curragh Camp on the 4th of June 1857:

"Unfit for further service. Private Henry Warren has suffered for several months from various symptoms of secondary syphilis. He also has rheumatic pains and Opthalma Syphilitic, and derives little comfort from treatment. They are the result of vice and mis-conduct."

Served 2 years 189 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 11 months.

Aged 22 years 6 months on discharge.

Conduct: "good".

Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Granted a pension of 6d. per day for six months, "final".

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean and Turkish medals.
