Birth & early life

Born in Rotherhithe, London.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 17th of July 1854.

Age: 20.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Butcher.

Features: Fair complexion. Hazel eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Embarked on the 24th of May and joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 20th of June 1855.

From Private to Corporal: 14th of November 1845.

Corporal to Sergeant: 7th of September 1857.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. Great Britain on the 8th of October 1857.

Reduced to Private by a Regimental Court-martial on the 10th of March 1858.

The musters for July-September of 1858 show him as being "On Field Service" during the whole of this period.

Served in the field at Rajghur and Mungrowlee with Captain William Gordon.

From Private to Corporal: 6th of January 1860.

Reduced to Private by a Regimental Court-martial on the 2nd of May 1864 and imprisoned until the 26th of May.

Re-engaged at Aldershot for a further 12 year period of service on the 20th of June 1866.

From Private to Corporal: 21st of August 1866.

Corporal to Sergeant: 9th of December 1868.

Attached to the 1st King's Dragoon Guards from the 6th of August - 1st of September 1869.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Dublin on the 17th of August 1875, "At own request, after 21 years service."

Served 21 years 1 month.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year. In India: 7 years 1 month.

Conduct: "good". In possession of three Good Conduct badges when promoted to Sergeant

Twice entered in the Regimental Defaulters' book. Twice tried by Court-martial.

Aged 40 years 1 month on discharge.

Awarded a pension of 1/- per day.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean, Turkish and Mutiny medals.

Mutiny medal without clasp. (Named as "Henry" Wardle on the Mutiny medal roll.)
