Birth & early life

Born in the parish of St. Mary's, Nottingham.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Newark-upon-Trent on the 2nd of January 1855.

Age: 20.

Height: 5' 9".

Trade: Stocking-maker.

Fair complexion. Grey eyes. Lt. brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 15th of June 1855.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1855.

From Private to Corporal: 3rd of June 1861.

Corporal to Sergeant: 17th of August 1864,

He was Provost Sergeant during 1864-65.

Re-engaged at Aldershot for a further 12 year period of service on the 4th of July 1866.

Appointed to Troop Sergeant Major on the 1st of February 1867.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Aldershot on the 13th of January 1876.

"Free, at own request after 21 years' service."

Served 21 years.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 210 days.

Conduct: "very good,"

In possession of two Good Conduct badges when promoted and would now have had five.

Never tried by Court-martial.

Granted a pension of 2/- per day on discharge.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India.

Served at Kotah and Gwalior.

Awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct medal on the 16th of February 1874.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal with one clasp, Turkish Medal, Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India, and the Long Service medal.

Not recorded by Lummis and Wynn.

Life after service

At discharge, he was intending to live at No. 12 Hillside Villas, Otley Head, Bradford, Yorkshire, but he was in Leeds in 1881.

1881 Census

No. 90 Queen's Place, Leeds

The 1881 Census Returns show him as as a Drill Instructor (Teacher), aged 47, born at Beeston, Notts, with his wife, Harriet, 38, born at Leeds.

His mother-in-law and a young niece are also shown as living with them.
