1100, Private Forster TAYLOR - 8th Hussars

Birth & early life

Born at Dannybrook, Co. Kerry.

Originally enlisted into the 8th Hussars at London on the 8th of September 1848.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: None shown.

Service

"Deserted" from Brighton on the 14th of December 1848. He was then described as being 5' 8" in height, with a fresh complexion, light brown hair and grey eyes.

He then re-enlisted into the 13th Light Dragoons at Dublin on the 10th of March 1849, with the Regimental number of 1271.

"Given up" as a deserter from the 8th Hussars on the 12th of August 1849 and was transferred back to them.

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial for "absence," and imprisoned from the 10-30 of September 1850.

Tried by a District Court-martial on the 29th of June 1853, after being confined from the 13th of June and sentenced to 168 days imprisonment with "hard labour."

Sent to the Cavalry Depot on the 19th of June 1854.

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 15th of June 1855.

Tried by a District Court-martial on the 25th of October 1855 for "being drunk on the line of march and on Water Piquet." Awarded 50 lashes and stoppage of 1d. per day for 30 days.

"Absent" from embarkation of detachment detail in March of 1856. Rejoined on the 11th of April and confined 12th-16 of April. Tried by a Regimental Court-martial and imprisoned from the 17-22 of April.

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "as a bad character", from Dundalk on the 4th of November 1856.

Served 10 years 6 days, to count.

Conduct and character: "Bad." Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Four times tried by Court-martial.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

Lummis and Wynn state that he "did not embark for the Crimea".
