1335, Sergeant Abraham TAYLOR - 8th Hussars

Birth & early life

Born at Aylesford, Kent.

Enlisted into the 94th Foot at Rochester on the 18th of May 1852.

(No Regimental number was allocated as he did not join the regiment from the Depot.)

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: Labourer.

Transferred to the 15th Hussars (in order to serve with elder brother, by Authority of a War Office letter, dated the 13th of October 1852) on the 1st of November 1852. No Regimental number was allocated as he did not join the regiment from the Depot.

Volunteered to the 8th Hussars on the 24th of June 1854.

From Private to Corporal: 1st of July 1854.

Corporal to Sergeant: 1st of August 1854.

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 12th of April 1855 and reduced to Private.

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 29th of April 1855.

Served with the detchment of the regiment under Lt. Colonel De Salis in the Expedition to Kertch on the 22nd of May 1855.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Dundalk on the 24th of January 1857:

"Unfit from extreme varicose veins - occurred on duty whilst breaking in a young horse in the Riding School on the 4th of August 1856."

Served 4 years 24 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year.

Conduct: "good".

In possession of one Good Conduct badge.

Aged 24 years on discharge.

Granted a pension of 6d. per day for 15 months.

Living in Chatham in 1858.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

Not recorded by Lummis and Wynn.

1881 Census

South Lodge, West Wickham, Kent

The 1881 Census Returns show him as a Gardener (Domestic), aged 48, born at Aylesford, Kent, with his wife, Sarah. D. , 46, born at Colyton, Devon.

His documents were returned to the War Office on the 21st of May 1885.
