Birth & early life

Born in the parish of St Marylebone, London.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 4th of May 1840.

Age: 20.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: Boot-maker.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Blue eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Dundalk on the 30th of August 1864.

"Own request, after 24 years' service."

Served 24 years 103 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year 10 months.

Conduct: "a good soldier".

In possession of four Good Conduct badges.

Once entered in the Regimental Defaulters' book. Never tried by Court-martial.

Aged 44 years 7 months on discharge.

To live, c/o. Mr. Penn, 34 Cork Street, Dorset Square, London.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean, Turkish and Long Service medal, with a gratuity.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman, and Sebastopol.

Awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct medal on the 16th of November 1860, with a gratuity of £5.

Granted a pension of 1/3d. per day.

Life after service

Death & burial

Died in the No. 1 East London Pension District on the 21st of July 1866.

His death certificate states that he died at 24 Clarendon Street, Somers Town, from "Phthisis, 3 years", aged 49 years. His occupation is given as Pensioner of the 4th Hussars. A Mary Turner (who had to make her mark) was present at and the informant of his death. (There is a copy in the "Certificates" file.)
