1724, Private Robert Frederick QUAYLE — 11th Hussars

Birth & early life

Born in Liverpool.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Liverpool on the 29th of July 1854.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: Watch-maker.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Blue eyes. Dk. brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 25th of May 1855.

He is shown on a nominal roll made out at the Cavalry Depot, Scutari, on the 9th of November 1855 as having been On Duty there from the 20th of August.

Transferred to the 3rd Dragoon Guards on the 1st of March 1857 with the Regimental No. of 379.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from the Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley, on the 2nd of June 1863, as

"Discharged for reasons of attached medical report. Suffers from palpitations of the heart, which started about six years ago. Most frequent when riding, but sometimes when quiet. Has frequent pain over the cardiac region. This valvular disease of the heart will affect and influence his ability of earning his living."

Aged 23 years 10 months.

Served 7 years 257 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year. East Indies, 3 years 139 days.

Conduct and character: "Indifferent." Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

In receipt of a pension of 6d. per day for 15 months.

Twice tried by District Court-martial and once by Regimental Court-martial.

Tried and sentenced to 50 lashes. 10th of March 1858.

Tried and imprisoned, 24th of September — 7th of November 1861.

Tried and imprisoned, 28th of February — 27th of August 1862.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal with one clasp.

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol and the Turkish medal.

Life after service

1871 Census

80, Christian Street, Liverpool.

Robert F. Quayle, aged 34, unmarried, lodger, Corn Porter, born Liverpool.

He was living with 80 other male lodgers. Francis Crockett and his wife and two children ran the Lodging House.

1881 Census

26, Holly Street, Liverpool

The 1881 Census Returns show him as living in a Common Lodging House, the home of Thomas McDuffy, a Cabinet Maker, as a Lodger. He is described as a Cotton Packer, married, aged 43, born in Liverpool, No fewer than 137 named men are recorded as living there.
