1419, Benjamin PULLEN — 4th Light Dragoons

Birth & early life

Born in London.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 17th of July 1849.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 9".

Trade: Labourer.

He was tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 21st of July 1854 for "disobedience of orders." Given 50 lashes.

Sent to Scutari and being at the General Depot from the 24th of September 1854 until invalided (via Malta on the 10th of November 1854), to England on the 1st of March 1855.

Joined the Canterbury Depot from Chatham on the 29th of March 1855.

"Deserted" from Newbridge on the 5th of July 1875 and rejoined the regiment on the 23rd of September 1865.

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "time expired", [sic] from Edinburgh on the 7th of May 1866.

Served 15 years 109 days, but only 2 years 70 days, to count.

Conduct and character: "Bad". Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

To live in London after discharge.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for the Alma, but he is not shown on the Sebastopol clasp list, although obviously entitled.

A man of this name was shown in the 1881 Census returns as living at No 11 Suffolk Place, St. Marylebone, London, as a Lodger (Head) a Carman, aged 50, born in London, with his wife, Dinah, aged 40 and also born in London.
