Birth & early life

Born at Tipperary, Co. Tipperary,

Enlistment

Enlisted at Cahir on the 1st of February 1848.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 7.

Trade: Weaver.

Sallow complexion. Grey eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Embarked for the Crimea aboard the H.T. "Echunga" on the 27th of April 1854.

Sent to Scutari on the 26th of October and rejoined the regiment on the 29th of December 1854,

Served with Lord Raglan's Escort Troop during 1855.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

From Private to Corporal: 20th of May 1861.

Corporal to Sergeant: 1st of November 1863.

Reduced to Private by a Regimental Court-martial on the 6th of May 1867.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Dublin on the 9th of May 1871.

"Own request, free to pension after 24 years' service."

Served 24 years 32 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 2 years

In India: 6 years 1 month.

Thirty times entered in the Regimental Defaulters' book, Three times tried by Court-martial.

Confined, 17-18 of January. Tried by a Regimental Court-martial and imprisoned from the 19-26 of November 1851.

"Absent," 12th-14 of October. Tried by a Regimental Court-martial and imprisoned from the 15th of October — 18th of November 1851,

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal with clasps for A. and S., Turkish Medal and the Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India.

Aged 42 years on discharge.

He is shown on the Regimental "Married roll" from the 11th of May 1864, his wife's name being Catherine.

To live at No. 1 Pancroft Place, Exeter, after discharge.

He was granted a pension of 1/1d per day.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Alma and Sebastopol.

Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India.

Served at Kotah and Gwalior.

Death & burial

Died in the No 1 West London Pension District on the 28th of January 1876.

Further information

The St. Catherine's House records show him as dying in the Farnham, Hampshire, District, aged 50 years, during the January-March Quarter of 1876.
