Birth & early life

Born at Astley, Yorkshire, c.1827.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Leamington on the 5th of January 1855, having been a volunteer from the 2nd Worcestershire Militia. Regimental No. 799.

Age: 28.

Height: 5' 6.".

Trade: Labourer.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 14th of July 1855.

Tried by a District Court-martial on the 19th of November 1855 for "Desertion and making away with his necessaries." Awarded 168 days' imprisonment with hard labour, and to be marked with the letter "D". 84 days of this sentence were remitted.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

"Absent without leave" at Brighton from the 27th of July until he rejoined the regiment on the 17th of September 1864. Tried by a District Court-martial on the 27th of September, sentenced to 168 days in Weedon Military Prison and to "forfeit all past and future service".

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "time expired", from Manchester on the 24th of April 1866.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

Mutiny medal with clasp with clasp for Central India.

Served at Kotah.

The "Returned Medal Book" states, "Forfeited his Turkish medal and this was returned to the Mint." No reason for this was stated, or trace of issue.

To live in Astley, Yorkshire.

Not recorded by Lummis and Wynn.
