Born at Manchester, c.1834, and christened in St. Mary's (Manchester Cathedral) on the 30th of November 1834, the son of John and Mary (nee Holford) Leach.
His parents were married in St Mary's on the 19th of June 1832.
Enlisted at Manchester on the 20th of November 1854.

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 14th of June 1855.
Tried by a Regimental Court-martial for "absence" on the 9th of January 1856. Awarded 14 days' imprisonment, with hard labour.
Discharged, on the "Reduction of the Regiment", from Brighton on the 24th of November 1856.
Served 1 year 354 days.
Conduct: "good". Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.
Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.
