Born at Firstock, Devonshire, c.1820.
The parish records for Frithelstock, near Barnstaple, show his baptism there on the 23rd of April 1820 by the Revd. Denys Young, Curate. He was the eldest son of Richard Labbett, Yeoman, and his wife, Catherine.
The records also show that his father married Catherine Mullis at Frithelstock, by banns, on the 10th of June 1819. The ceremony was conducted by the Revd. Denys Young and the witnesses were Humphrey Mallet and Rowland Moore.
Two other sons born into the family were Thomas, baptised on the 21st of March 1821, and William, baptised on the 24th of October 1824.
Enlisted at Barnstaple on the 24th of December 1843.

The muster roll states: "Believed to have died on board ship, 24th of September 1854.Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for the Alma.
Lummis and Wynn state that he was also entitled to the clasp for Sebastopol, but he is not so shown on the clasp roll.
