1302, Private Alfred LEWIS — 17th Lancers

Birth & early life

Born in Marylebone, London, c.1835.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 19th of August 1854.

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 9".

Trade: Servant.

Features: Fresh complexion. Blue eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 20th of June 1855.

From Private to Corporal, 1st of July 1857.

Corporal to Sergeant, 7th of September 1857.

Sent to the Depot at Canterbury on the 1st of October 1858.

Embarked for India, arriving at Bombay on the 10th of May and joining the regiment on the 24th of May 1858.

The musters for July-September of 1858 show him as being "On Field Service" during September of this period.

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial and reduced to Private on the 23rd of May 1865 for being "absent, without leave".

To Aldershot on the 2nd of March 1866 and attached to the 8th Hussars as a Rough-rider.

Re-engaged at Aldershot for a further 12 years' service on the 15th of August 1856.

Attached to the 15th Hussars as a Rough-Rider in April of 1867.

From Private to Corporal, 9th of December 1867.

Corporal to Sergeant, 14th of February 1871.

Attached to the Northumberland and Newcastle Yeomanry from Dundalk and was transferred to the Permanent Staff of this regiment to "complete service to pension", on the 14th of February 1874.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Dublin on the 7th of September 1875 at "Own request, after completion of second period of engagement."

Served 21 years 20 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year

In India: 6 years 9 months.

Conduct: "very good."

In possession of two Good Conduct badges when promoted to Sergeant

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Can find no trace on the Mutiny medal roll.

His documents however, besides confirming the award of the Crimean and Turkish medals, also show him as being entitled to the Mutiny medal.

Awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct medal on the 22nd of March 1873.

Commemorations

Life after service

To live at No. 72 Blackett Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Co. Northumberland, after discharge.
