Birth & early life

Born c.1816 at Dowaster, near Bridport, Devonshire. [PB: Where is Dowaster?]

Enlistment

Enlisted at Salisbury on the 22nd of December 1836.

Age: 20 years 8 months.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: Labourer.

Sallow complexion. Grey eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Returned to England aboard the "Repulse" on the 27th of March 1842, having left Bombay on the 28th of December 1841.

From Private to Corporal: 1st of December 1858.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Dublin on the 16th of October 1860.

"Own request, to Out-Pension after 24 years' service."

Served 25 years 201 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year 10 months

In India: 4 years.

Aged 45 years on discharge.

Conduct and character: "a good soldier".

In possession of four Good Conduct badges.

Four times entered in the Regimental Defaulter's book. Once tried by Court-martial.

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 25th of March 1847 and sentenced to 20 days imprisonment.

Granted a pension of 1/3d. per day.

To live at Manchester after discharge.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman and Sebastopol.

Awarded the medal for Ghuznee,

Documents confirm the award of the Crimea, Ghuznee and Turkish medals. His medal (or medals) are said to have appeared in a Spink's list some time in 1886.
