1870, Private Robert GOW — 4th Light Dragoons

Birth & early life

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, c.1831.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Liverpool on the 5th of February 1855.

Age: 24 years.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Farrier.

Fair complexion. Grey eyes. Black hair.

Service

Appointed Shoeing-Smith on the 4th of February 1860.

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "by purchase", from Dublin on the 11th of March 1864, "he having paid the regulated compensation of £20, which has been lodged in the hands of the Regimental Paymaster..."

Served 9 years 35 days. In the Army in the East and the Crimea, 10 months.

Conduct and character: "a good soldier".

In possession of one Good Conduct badge.

Eleven times entered in the Regimental Defaulter's book. Never tried by Court-martial.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal only. (See record of 1941 Samuel Briggs.)

Landed in the Crimea after the 9th of September 1855 but is specially entitled to the Crimean medal in consequence of having served with the Regiment during the Expedition to Eupatoria during the month of October of that same year... Camp Aldershot, dated 16th of November 1857.

To live at 19, Mell Street, Perth, Scotland.

He later served in the 2nd Class Army Reserve from the 13th of June 1865 until the 5th of January 1889 (42nd. Regimental District) and with a total service of 21 years to count towards pension was granted a pension of 9d. per day. He was living at No. 253 Hugh Street, Perth, at the time of his final discharge.
