Birth & early life

Born in the parish of St. Margaret's, Westminster, London, c.1818.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Westminster on the 22nd of June 1838.

Age: 20 years 6 months.

Height: 5' 11".

Trade: Labourer.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Grey eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Returned to England aboard the "Mary" on the 12th of March 1842, having left Bombay on the 13th of December 1841.

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 4th of July 1842 and imprisoned for 20 days.

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 18th of March 1844 and imprisoned for 40 days.

Tried by a Garrison Court-martial on the 23rd of September 1847 and was "imprisoned for three months and a stoppage of pay of 1d. per day for thirty days after this sentence was completed."

He was at the "Sick Horse Depot" on the 5th of November 1854.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Newbridge on the 31st of March 1863.

"Free, at own request, having served 24 years."

Served 24 years 122 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year 10 months. India 3 years,

Conduct: "latterly good".

In possession of one Good Conduct badge.

Life after service

Intended place of residence after discharge, "The Hampshire Hog", Charles Street, Westminster.

Death & burial

Died at Birmingham on the 4th of March 1875 from "Phthisis and Exhaustion. (2 years)". He was shown as being aged 51 [sic] years of age, a Chelsea Pensioner. His address at the time of death being 5, Queen Street, King's Norton, Birmingham.

His widow, M.A. Garvey, was present at, and the informant of his death. (See copy of his death certificate in the "Certificates" file.)
