1167, Sergeant James George GALE — 4th Light Dragoons

Birth & early life

Born in the parish of St. Marylebone, London, on the 8th of December 1820.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Queen's Square, London, on the 4th of March 1843.

Age: 22 years 3 months.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: Tailor.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Grey eyes. Brown hair.

Service

From Private to Corporal: 6th of February 1846.

Corporal to Sergeant: 9th of May 1853.

At Scutari from the 4th of April — 11th of May 1855.

A nominal roll of men of the regiment made out at the Cavalry Depot, Scutari, on the 9th off November 1855 shows him as being On Duty there from the 4th of November as the Acting Depot Sergeant Major.

Appointed to Troop Sergeant Major on the 3rd of October 1857.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Cahir on the 3rd of February 1862.

"Free, at own request, he having claimed the right of registry for a deferred pension of 6d. per day upon reaching the age of 50 years."

Served 18 years 336 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year 10 months.

Conduct and character: "a good soldier". Would, if not promoted, now be in possession of three Good Conduct badges.

Never entered in the Regimental Defaulter's book. Never tried by Court-martial.

Aged 43 years 3 months on discharge.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Inkerman and Sebastopol.

To live, c/o "The Canteen," Aldershot Camp.
