Birth & early life

Born at Yatton, Somerset, c.1834.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Cork on the 1st of December 1854.

Age: 20.

Height: 5' 6.

Trade: Labourer.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea from Cork on the 19th of July 1855. Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

The musters for July-September of 1858 show him as being "On Field Service" from September of this period.

Discharged, "time expired," from Aldershot on the 8th of December 1866.

Conduct: "very good."

In possession of two Good Conduct badges.

To live at Weston-Super-Mare after discharge.

He re-enlisted into the 1st Royal Dragoons at Bristol on the 26th of January 1867, aged 32 years and 1 month. His Regimental number was 894, and his physical description was given as being of a fair complexion, with hazel eyes and brown hair.

His previous service in the 17th Lancers was allowed to reckon towards pension — vide a War Office letter, dated the 25th of June 1867.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from York on the 8th of February 1876.

"Free, and at his own request, after 21 years service."

Served a total of 21 years 6 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 9 months

In India: 7 years and 3 months.

Conduct and character: "has been very good."

In possession of five Good Conduct badges.

Never entered in the Regimental Defaulter's book. Never tried by Court-martial.

Aged 41 years 2 months on discharge.

To reside, c/o. "The Post Office," Taunton, Somerset.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Can find no trace on the Mutiny medal roll.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal with one clasp and the Turkish Medal.

He was also awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct medal on the 16th of February 1874, with a gratuity of £5.

1881 Census

Church Causeway, Yatton, Somerset.

The 1881 Census shows him as a Pensioner (Chelsea ) and General Labourer, aged 45, born at Yatton, Somerset, with his wife, Anne, 46, born at West Monkton, Somerset. No children are recorded.

Death & burial

The GRO records show him as dying aged 55 in the Bedminster district in the March quarter of 1891. [RM]
