Born c.1836 at Wooten [Wotton] Underwood, Buckinghamshire, and christened there on the 21st of October 1836, the son of John Gutteridge and his wife Eliza, nee Briant.
His brother was 1329, Sergeant George Graham Gutteridge, 11th Hussars.

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 25th of May 1855.
From Private to Corporal: 1st of July 1856:
"In confinement", 23th — 28th of September. Tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 29th of September 1857 for being "Absent without leave". Awarded 168 days' imprisonment (of which 128 were remitted) and reduced to Private.

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.
He and his wife Maria [Mary Jane] had seven children. The eldest son, John, served in the Northumberland Fusiliers and died at Cherat, India, in August 1893. His youngest son, Ernest, served during World War One on the Somme and was wounded at Passechendale Ridge.
