Birth & early life

Born in Orchorny, Tralee, Co. Kerry c.1827.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Dublin on the 22nd of November 1847.

Age: 20.

Height: 5' 9".

Trade: Labourer.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Blue eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Embarked for the Crimea aboard the H. T. "Echunga" on the 15th of May 1854. From Private to Corporal: 22nd of November 1856.

Corporal to Sergeant: 19th of September 1857.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S. S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

Re-engaged to complete 24 years' service on the 26th of April 1860.

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial and reduced to Private on the 5th of June 1866.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Edinburgh on the 25th of May 1869, as:

"Unfit for further service, Suffers from fatty degeneration of the heart. Partly pre-disposition and from drinking, for which he has the reputation of being a hard drinker. Likely to interfere with his ability to earn a livelihood."

Served 21 years 187 days. In the Crimea and Turkey, 1 year 11 months

In India: 6 years 1 month.

Once entered in the Regimental Defaulter's book. Once tried by Court-martial.

Aged 42 years 6 months on discharge.

Awarded a pension of 1/- per day, and to live c/o. "The Post Office," Tralee.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Inkerman and Sebastopol.

Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India,

A request was sent by the War Office to the East India Company's medallists asking that he be issued with a replacement Indian Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India "at his own expense," (7/6d. ) This medal was sent to the Treasury on the 20th of July 1869.

Served at Kotah.

Life after service

The Application records for In-Pensioners to the Royal Hospital, although showing much of what is already known, also show that at this time (May 1869) he was 42 years of age, he had no family, his character by the Dublin Pensions Officer was classed as "Very good", but he was refused admission vide the Hospital Surgeon Dr. Cart's report:

"Suffers from Chronic Rheumatism. I cannot however, recommend this man for admittance, as he is now, and has been for some time, indulging in the too frequent use of intoxicating drink."

Death & burial

Died at Limerick, Ireland. on the 12th of March 1874.
