Birth & early life

Born in the parish of St. Mary's, Bristol, c.1836.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Westminster on the 4th of November 1854.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 5".

Trade: Labourer.

Features: Dark complexion. Hazel eyes. Dk. brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 12th of July 1855.

Confined from the 28th of August 1855 and tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 30th of August. Awarded 50 lashes.

Sent to Scutari on the 12th of September 1855.

He is shown on a nominal roll of men of the regiment at the Cavalry Depot, Scutari, made out on the 9th of November 1855, as being On Duty there from the 15th of September.

Rejoined the regiment on the 20th of November.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Dundalk on the 21st of October 1856:

"Reduction of the Army and being totally unfit for further service. General bad health and debility — attributable to service in the Crimea at too early an age. Not ever likely to become an efficient soldier."

Served 1 year 331 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 9 months,

Conduct and character: "good".

Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Aged 20 years on discharge.

Awarded a pension of 6d. per day for a period of six months.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

An entry in red ink on his documents shows, "Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol." No date is given, but an entry on the back of the record shows, "D. D. to A. G. for record of medal", dated the 22nd of July 1903.

Not recorded by Lummis and Wynn.

Life after service

Intended to live in the parish of St. Luke's, London, after discharge.

1881 Census

22, Banner Street, St. Luke's Parish, London

The 1881 Census shows him as a Silver Beater, aged 44, born at Bristol, Somerset, with his wife, Mary, 49, born at Wykeham Marsh, Buckinghamshire.

Five children are shown, with ages ranging from 20 to 6 years, the eldest son being a Lamplighter (Gas) and the eldest daughter a Fancy Box Maker.

Refused extra pension on the 8th of June 1903 as "not necessitous" but was later granted a "Special Campaign Pension" (no date or amount specified).
