Birth & early life

Born in Carmarthen, Wales, c.1833.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 9th of June 1853.

Age: 20.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: Shoe-maker.

Features: Sallow complexion. Hazel eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Sent to Scutari on the 10th of May 1855.

Invalided to England aboard the "Edwin Fox" on the 26th of September 1855.

On the Depot roll at Brighton and rejoined the regiment at Cahir, 1st of June 1856.

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "invalided" from Dublin on the 15th of April 1857:

"A weakly and very delicate constitution, Complains of pain in the left side — caused by chronic affliction of the spleen. Disease not caused through his military service, but rather, constitutional. Not aggravated by vice or mis-conduct. Conduct in hospital — Good."

Served 4 years 225 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 2 years 5 months.

Conduct: "bad." Is not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Once tried by Court-martial.

Tried and imprisoned for "absence" from the 23rd of November 1856 — 14th of January 1857.

Awarded a pension of 6d. per day for one year.

He was refused a "Campaign pension" on the 20th of October 1897, and told that he was "not entitled, did not serve ten years..."

Refused compensation, letter being sent to the Revd. Duckworth regarding this.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Inkerman, Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

To live in Carmarthen after discharge.
