1090, Trumpeter John William DUNN — 8th Hussars

Born c.1835.

Educated at theRoyal Military Asylum (also known as The Duke of York's School) at Chelsea which he had entered on the 26th of March 1842, aged 7 years 3 months.

At this time, his father, Gunner-Driver Bryan Dunn of the Royal Artillery, was shown as "Dead", and his mother, Eliza, as "Still alive".

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 10th of May 1849, and joined the Depot on the 28th of May.

Age: 14.

Height: 4' 8".

Trade: None.

Attained the age of 15 years and on to "Man's Pay" on the 16th of May 1850.

From Private to Trumpeter: 3rd of June 1852.

Service

Embarked for the Crimea aboard the HT "Wilson Kennedy" on the 2nd of May 1854.

Severely wounded during the Charge and was sent to Scutari, no date being recorded. The muster roll for the period states, "Missing since the 25th of October — he having been sent on board ship."

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava and Sebastopol.

Commemorations

His name is shown on the Roll of Honour at the Duke of York's School.

Death & burial

The medal roll states, "Died of wounds". No entry is shown in the General Depot muster rolls for his arrival there, so it must be presumed that he died on board ship and was buried at sea.
