580, Private William DUGGAN — 17th Lancers

Birth & early life

Born c.1819.

Probable brother [cousin?] of 579 John Duggan, 17th Lancers, who rode in the Charge. Their ages and same date of enlistment [PB: notice they have consecutive regimental numbers] support this.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Dublin on the 28th of November 1838.

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 10".

Trade: None shown.

Service

At Scutari from the 23rd of December 1854 and sent to rejoin the Regiment on the 11th of May 1855.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

The musters for July-September of 1858 show him as being "On Field Service" from September of this period.

Discharge & pension

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Balaclava, Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Can find no trace on the Mutiny medal roll.

Commemorations

Death & burial

Died at Secunderbad, India, on the 16th of December 1861.

The India Office records show him as having died of "Hepatitis" at Secunderbad on the 16th of December 1861, aged 42 years. He was buried on the 17th of December 1861 by the Revd. H. Pigot James, Chaplain.
