Birth & early life

Born in London, c.1827.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London into the 16th Lancers on the 23rd of August 1845. Regimental No. 1849.

Age: 17.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: Pawnbroker.

Appearance: Fair complexion. Hazel eyes. Lt. brown hair.

Transferred to the 17th Lancers at Cork on the 31st of January 1855.

Service

Embarked on the 20th of June and joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 19th of July 1855.

Sent to Scutari on the 12th of November 1855.

Transferred to the 12th Lancers at Dublin on the 12th of August 1856. Regimental No. 1821.

Transferred to the 3rd Bengal Light Cavalry on the 28th of February 1859. Regimental No. 255.

Served in Central India under Sir Hugh Rose in the operations against Ghansi, Calpi, or Gwalior.

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "at his own request", from Fort William, Calcutta, on the 9th of April 1862. "Did not wish to transfer to the British Forces."

Conduct and character: "good".

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India. This medal was awarded whilst he was serving in the 12th Lancers.

Life after service

1881 Census

45, Tottenham Road, Hackney, Middlesex.

A man of this name appears in the 1881 Census as aged 54 years, a Coachman (Domestic) born in Hornsey, Middlesex, with his wife, Ann, aged 50, born in Luccombe, Hertfordshire, and two children, aged 12 and 10 years, both Scholars.

The GRO records show his death, aged 67, in the Shoreditch district in the December quarter of 1895. [RM]
