1592, Private Thomas DIXON — 11th Hussars

Birth & early life

Born in the parish of Irby, near Grimsby, c.1825.

Enlistment

Enlisted into the 15th Hussars at Maidstone on the 1st of March 1845. No Regimental number was allocated, as he did not join the regiment.

Age: 20.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: None.

Appearance: Fresh complexion, Grey eyes, Lt. brown hair.

Service

Volunteered into the 3rd Light Dragoons on the 1st of April 1846. Regimental No. 1765.

Transferred to the 11th Hussars on the 1st of July 1853.

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 25th of May 1855.

Tried by a District Court-martial on the 8th of November 1855 for "being drunk on sentry." Given 25 lashes, and awarded stoppage of 1d. per day for 30 days.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Chatham Invalid Depot on the 30th of December 1856:

"Discharged from weak intellect as evinced from frequent acts of conduct and loss of memory which, although not amounting to anything serious at the moment, renders him unsafe as a sentry and not to be trusted with the weapons in his possession."

Aged 32 years 1 month on discharge.

Served 11 years 249 days, to count.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year 1 month. East Indies, 6 years 2 months.

Conduct: "good". In possession of two Good Conduct badges.

Granted a pension of 6d. per day for a period of two and a half years.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Was also entitled to the Punjab medal with clasps for Chilianwala and Goojerat.

Served during the whole of the campaign in the Punjab up to the occupation of Peshwar.

Life after service

Living in the Lincoln Pension District in 1858.
