Birth & early life

Born at Great Waltham, near Chelmsford, Essex.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 29th of May 1838.

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: Labourer.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Brown eyes. Dk. brown hair.

Service

Embarked for the Crimea aboard the H.T. "Shooting Star" on the 2nd of May 1854.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Canterbury on the 5th of April 1862.

"Free to pension, after 24 years' service."

Served 24 years 8 days. In Turkey and the Crimea 1 year 11 months.

Conduct: "very good".

In possession of five Good Conduct badges. Never tried by Court-martial.

Aged 43 years on discharge.

Granted a pension of 1/1d per day.

Next of kin: Wife, Eliza Crow, to whom he sent money from the Crimea.

To live c/o J.A McKenzie, 3 Johnson Buildings, Inner Temple, London.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Inkerman and Sebastopol. Awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct medal on the 24th of March 1860 with a gratuity of £5.
