696, Private Edward CAMMELL — 8th Hussars

Birth & early life

Born at Eye, Suffolk.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Ipswich on the 12th of February 1841.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 10".

Trade: Labourer.

Service

Embarked for the Crimea aboard the H.T. "Echunga" on the 15th of May 1854.

Rejoined the regiment from Scutari on the 14th of December 1854, where he had been since the 26th of October.

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 24th of April 1855 for "being drunk on duty" and sentenced to 50 lashes, of which 25 were remitted.

Died "before Sebastopol" on the 18th/19th of June 1855.

Next of kin: Father, George Cammell, living in Thwaite, near Eye, Suffolk.

He was most probably the brother of 904, Hospital Sergeant David Cammell, 8th Hussars (see his record).

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma and Sebastopol.

Further information

He was buried in the Third Division Cemetery, one of 1334 graves). In 1856 a wooden memorial was in existence, inscribed:

"To the memory of Private Ed. Cammell, aged 34 years, of the 8th King's Rl. Irish Hussars, who departed this life, 18th June 1855. Erected by his only brother, D. Cammell, Hospital Sergeant of the same Corps."
