Birth & early life

Born in the parish of St. George's, Liverpool.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 15th of July 1854.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Labourer.

Fair complexion. Blue eyes. Dk. brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 29th of April 1855.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

Re-engaged for 12 years further service at Weedon on the 19th of September 1866.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Aldershot on the 9th of April 1877.

"Free, at own request, after 21 years' service."

Served 22 years 185 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year. East Indies, 6 years 1 month.

Aged 42 years 10 months on discharge.

Conduct: "indifferent — addicted to drink, but a clean soldier and respectful to his officers."

Forty-four times entered in the Regimental Defaulter's book. Twice tried by Court-martial.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal, with clasp for Sebastopol, Turkish Medal and the Mutiny medal, clasp for Central India.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India.

Served at Kotah and Gwalior.

Named as "Cane" on the Mutiny medal roll.

Not recorded by Lummis and Wynn.
