1465 James COX — 4th Light Dragoons

Birth & early life

Born at Kirkee, India.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Dublin on the 7th of November 1850.

Age: 16 years 1 month.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: None.

Left the regiment for the General Depot at Scutari on the 20th of September 1854.

The muster roll states, "Believed to have died on the passage down to Scutari" on the 21st of September 1854.

Next of kin: Mother, Jane Cox, living in London.

Lummis and Wynn state that he was entitled to the clasp for Sebastopol, but his name cannot be found on the clasp roll. His name does appear on the A. and I. roll but with no entitlement shown to either.

Further information

The India Office records show that he was born on the 25th of September 1834 at Kirkee, the son of Charles Cox (Private in the 4th Light Dragoons) and his wife, Jane. He was christened on the 12th of November 1834.

(His father's regimental number was originally shown as 593, but was changed to 723 from the October-December quarter of 1834. No reason was shown for this. On the 30th of July 1840, when the regiment was stationed at Kirkee, India, he was "Discharged with Ignominy". No other details are shown.
