1782 William CLAYTON — 4th Light Dragoons

Birth & early life

Born at Macclesfield.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Manchester on the 17th of January 1855.

Age: 19 years 4 months.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Weaver.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Blue eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 20th of June 1855.

A nominal roll of men of the regiment at the Cavalry Depot, Scutari, made out on the 9th of November 1855, shows him as being On Duty there from the 4th of November.

Transferred to the 8th Hussars at Aldershot on the 1st of September 1857. Regimental No. 31.

"Deserted" on the 19th of September 1857 and rejoined the Regimental Depot on the 16th of January 1858.

Tried and imprisoned by a Regimental Court-martial from the 26th of January to the 25th of April 1858. Also to forfeit all previous service of 2 years 245 days, but this was restored by a War Office letter dated the 6th of February 1867.

Transferred to the 5th Lancers on the 1st of November 1861. Regimental No. 579.

Re-engaged for a further period of 12 years' service and transferred to the 7th Dragoon Guards on the 3rd of December 1867. Regimental No. 978.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Newbridge on the 26th of August 1876.

"Claimed, after expiry of second period of twelve years' service."

Served 21 years 324 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 324 days

In India: 4 years 119 days.

Conduct: "very good".

In possession of five Good Conduct badges.

Three times entered in the Regimental Defaulter's book. Once tried by Court-martial.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol and the Turkish medal.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with the clasp for Sebastopol.

Awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct medal (without gratuity) on the 1st of July 1876.

To live at Cresswell Street, Ardwick, Manchester.

Not recorded by Lummis and Wynn.
