837, Private William COPE — 17th Lancers

Birth & early life

Born in the parish of St. Mary's, Nottingham, on the 22nd of April 1828.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Nottingham on the 23rd of April 1846.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: None.

Appearance: Fair complexion. Grey eyes. Dk. brown hair.

Service

From Private to Corporal: 13th of November 1855.

On Recruiting duties at Nottingham from the 18th of August 1857.

Sent to the Depot at Canterbury on the 1st of October 1857, when the Regiment embarked for India for the Mutiny campaign.

Promoted to Sergeant, "for the voyage out", and joined the regiment in India on the 10th of October 1860.

The India Office records show a son, George, was born to him and his wife, Mary Ann, at Secunderand bad on the 5th of May 1862. He was christened there on the 6th of November by the Revd. Milward R. Burgess, Chaplain.

Allowed to take his discharge in India, by authority of the Commander-in-Chief, and being discharged at Khandalla on the 9th of February 1863, intending to live in Bombay, but there is no indication if he remained in India until his death or ever returned to England, but he became eligible for a pension of 6d per day on the 21st of April 1878, upon reaching the age of 50 years. At this time he was still living in Bombay.

Served 16 years 224 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea, 2 years. India, 2 years 3 months.

Conduct: "very good."

In possession of three Good Conduct badges.

Never tried by Court-martial,

Aged 34 years 7 months on discharge.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman, Sebastopol. and the Turkish medal.
