Birth & early life

Born at Holbeach, Lincolnshire.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Chichester on the 11th of December 1854.

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: Labourer.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 27th of July 1855.

Transferred to the 2nd Dragoon Guards on the 31st of December 1856. Regimental. No. 255.

To India aboard the "Non Such" on the 25th of November 1857.

Served during the Mutiny at Nusseratpore, Korsee and Newabgunge.

Died at Lucknow, India, on the 14th of September 1858.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Mutiny medal with clasp for Lucknow.

Death & burial

Died at Lucknow, India, on the 14th of September 1858, and was buried in the Lucknow Military Cemetery.

Next of kin: Father, William Coates, living at Holbeach, Lincolnshire.
