Birth & early life

[RM: Born at Paddington, London, on 26th of April 1837, the son of William and Louisa Christian. Baptized at St James', Paddington, on 18th of May 1837.]

1851 Census

Austin Christian, 14, Scholar, born Bayswater, Middlesex.

12 Lion Place, Margate, along with 35 other boys.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 18th of July 1854.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: None shown.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea from Brighton on the 20th of June 1855.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

The muster rolls for the period July-September 1858 show him as being "On Field Service" during the whole of this period.

Served in the field at Rajghur and Mungrowlee with Captain William Gordon.

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "by purchase", from Aldershot on the 15th of June 1866 with a payment of £20.

Served 11 years 42 days.

Conduct: "Indifferent". Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Mutiny medal without clasp.
