Birth & early life

Born at Walcot, Co. Cork.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Cork on the 21st of November 1854.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: None shown.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 16th of July 1855.

At the General Hospital, Scutari, from the 8th of November — 20th of December 1855.

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 6th of March 1856 for "making away with his pistol". Sentenced to 20 days imprisonment with hard labour and stoppage of pay.

From Private to Corporal: 1st of October 1857.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1858.

The muster rolls for the period July-September 1858 show him as being "On Field Service" during the whole of this period.

Served in the field at Rajghur and Mungrowlee with Captain William Gordon.

Prisoner "In cells" from the 22nd and reduced to Private by a Regimental Court-martial on the 28th of January 1859.

Discharge & pension

Discharged "time expired", from Aldershot on the 24th of December 1866.

Served 12 years, of which 11 years 360 days were "to count".

Conduct: "very good".

In possession of two Good Conduct badges.

To live in Cork after discharge.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Mutiny medal without clasp.
