Birth & early life

Born at Wymondham, near Norwich, probably a son of James Chapman and his wife Margaret (nee Poll), who were married at Wymondham on the 24th of February 1825.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Norwich on the 27th of April 1852.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Brick-layer.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Brown eyes Lt. brown hair.

Service, discharge & pension

At Scutari from the 13th of January — 11th of May 1855.

Discharged "Invalided", from Dublin on the 27th of November 1856, as

"Permanently incapacitated, resulting from Ingumal Hernia which suddenly occurred whilst riding in a field day at Pheonix Park in September last."

Served 4 years 168 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea, 2 years.

Conduct: "good.

In possession of one Good Conduct badge.

Awarded a pension of 6d. per day for 15 months, "final".

Aged 22 years 2 months on discharge.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Life after service

To live at Bethnal Green, London, after discharge.
