1418, Private Henry BROWN — 17th Lancers

Birth & early life

Born at Fletching, Sussex c.1836.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Brighton on the 4th of January 1855.

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Shoeing-smith.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Grey eyes, Brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea from Brighton on the 20th of June 1855.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

The July-September 1858 muster rolls show him as being "On Field Service" during September of this period. Served in action against the rebels at Zeerapore on the 29th of December 1858 and at Baroda on the 1st of January 1859.

The India Office records show a son, Charles John, was born to him and his wife (named as Julia) at Secunderbad, India, on the 5th of June 1862. He was baptised on the 11th of June by the Revd. T. Barbera, Chaplain.

Re-engaged at Aldershot for a further term of 12 years' service on the 26th of September 1866.

From Private to Shoeing-smith: 12th of November 1867.

Next-of-kin (1867): Wife, Judith Brown.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Dublin on the 31st of May 1870:

"Has chronic Phthisis from a cold caught at Edinburgh in January of 1870. Caused by service and the exposure to cold in the trying climate of Scotland. Not able to contribute much towards earning a livelihood."

Aged 34 years 3 months on discharge.

Served 15 years 102 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea, 10 months. India, 7 years 1 month.

Conduct: "very good".

In possession of three Good Conduct badges.

Twice entered in the Regimental Defaulters' book. Never tried by Court-martial.

To live at Sharpe's Bridge, Sussex.

Petitioned for a further increase in pension on the 24th of February 1874 and received 6d. per day, "permanent", from the 10th of March 1874.

Life after service

He was living in the Brighton Pension District in 1875.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, the Turkish medal, and the Mutiny medal without clasp.
