John BROWN — 1790, 11th Hussars
Born in Southwark, London, c.1833.
Enlisted at Westminster on the 23rd of November 1854.
Age: 21.
Height: 5' 6".
Trade: Hatter.
Appearance: Dark complexion. Grey eyes. Dk. brown hair.
Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 29th of May 1855.
A man of this name and regiment (but with no Regimental number recorded) was tried by Court-martial at Canterbury on the 8th of December 1856 for "Allowing a prisoner to escape, he having left his post." No sentence was awarded, "In consequence of his previous good conduct."
Transferred to the 17th Lancers on the 1st of September 1857. Regimental No. 136.
Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.
Re-engaged at Aldershot for a further 12 years' service on the 24th of November 1866.
>Discharged from Dublin on the 27th of November 1875 as "Free, to pension after 24 years service."
Aged 42 years on discharge.
In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year. East Indies, 7 years 9 months.
Conduct: "very good". In possession of four Good Conduct badges.
Twice entered in the Regimental Defaulters' book. Never tried by Court-martial.

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

In action against the rebels at Zeerapore on the 29th of December 1858 and at Baroda on the 1st of January 1859.
He was awarded the Long Service & God Conduct medal on the 10th of February 1873.

The 1891 Census shows him as a "Cab Proprietor" aged 56, living at 4, Alexandra Mews, Hammersmith. His wife Maria, aged 46 being born at Witham, Essex (the very place he was discharged to in 1876.) By 1901 he was a "Cab Driver/Groom" living at 31, Sulgrave Rd, South Hammersmith. He had remarried by this time as his wife is shown as Emma, aged 42, born Suffolk, A step-daughter Lilley Wingay aged 11 is also shown.
