Birth & early life

Born in Middlesex. [RM: Pimlico]

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 3rd of November 1851.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Servant.

Service

A Troop Cook January-March 1855.

Sent to Scutari on the 4th of April and invalided to England on the 16th of May 1855.

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "by claim. Limited Service expired", from Dublin on the 6th of December 1863.

Served 12 years 35 days.

Conduct and character: "good".

In possession of two Good Conduct badges. (WO/25/3869 gives his second Christian name as "Lyon." and not Leonard. and this is repeated in the Scutari Cavalry Depot rolls for the period he was there.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman and Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Commemorations

[PB: Obituary notice says he was present at the 1875 banquet at Alexandra Palace, "and was very proud of the volume presented to each of them containing, among other things, the names of those present".]

Death & burial

Death registered;

John Lion [sic] Baxter, aged 42 years, June Quarter 1876, Kidderminster

He is said to have died at Wolverley, near Kidderminster, in 1874, and to be buried in the churchyard of St. John the Baptist. An intensive check, however, shows no trace of a gravestone having been erected.
