1455, Sergeant John ANDERSON — 4th Light Dragoons

Birth & early life

Born at Killeraght, Boyle, Co. Roscommon, c.1830.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Athlone on the 13th of April 1848.

Age: 18 years 10 months.

Height: 5' 9".

Trade: Farmer.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Blue eyes. Auburn hair.

Service

From Private to Corporal: 25th of November 1853.

Sent to the Depot at Canterbury on the 10th of July 1854 when the regiment had embarked, and joined it in the Crimea on the 1st of June 1855.

Corporal to Sergeant: 24th of May 1855.

Tried and reduced to Private by a Regimental Court-martial on the 27th of January 1857.

From Private to Corporal: 1st of October 1857.

Corporal to Sergeant: 1st of March 1858.

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial and reduced to Private for "neglect of duty" on the 27th of January 1857.

He was also imprisoned: 3rd of February — 19th of March 1860.

Re-engaged at Cahir for a further period of 12 years' service on the 12th of December 1862.

From Private to Corporal: 16th of December 1863.

Corporal to Sergeant: 1st of May 1867.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Canterbury on the 2nd of July 1873, "Free, to pension after 23 years' service."

Conduct: "good". Possessed one Good Conduct badge when promoted and would now be in possession of four.

Twelve times entered in the Regimental Defaulter's book. Twice tried by Court-martial.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year 1 month.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean and Turkish medals.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

To live at No. 40 East Street, Sudbury, Suffolk.

Lummis and Wynn state, "Nothing further known".
