Birth & early life

Born at Colchester, Essex, and baptised on the 28th of July 1836 as Watson Rycroft Aylett in the church of St. Mary the Virgin (Within the walls), the son of John Watson Aylett and his wife Mary-Ann.

His father had married Mary-Ann Rycroft in the same church on the 27th of July 1828.

1851 Census

Trinity Street, Colchester.

John Aylett, 48, Sergeant, East Essex Militia.

Mary, 39.

Four children shown: Watson, 14, Eliza, 11, Henry, 8, and Elizabeth, 6.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 28th of December 1853.

Age: 17.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Groom.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea from Cork on the 29th of June 1855.

Died in the General Hospital at Scutari on the 16th of July 1855.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

Death & burial

Died in the General Hospital at Scutari on the 16th of July 1855.

Next of kin: Father, John Aylett, living in Colchester.
