Birth & early life

Born in the parish of St. Leonard's, Middlesex, London.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 10th of November 1854.

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Cabinet-maker.

Appearance: Dark complexion. Hazel eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 25th of May 1855.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Canterbury on the 6th of November 1856:

"Being considered inefficient and the Reduction of the Regiment. Medical Officer's report; No. 1767 Private Saint Peter Austin, 11th Hussars, is subject to Palpitations of the Heart, with difficulty in breathing, the effects of a very unhealthy constitution, and not, to my knowledge, aggravated by any mis-conduct on his part. The affection renders him unable to perform the duties required of a dragoon and he is never likely to become efficient. He is therefore recommended for discharge."

Served 2 years 8 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 8 months.

Conduct and character: "good". Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

On the 13th of March 1902 he was awarded a "Special Campaign Pension of 9d. per day." There is no supporting medical or other certificate in his documents.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol and the Turkish medal.

Recorded in red ink on the 7th of February 1902 is "War Office – Awarded Crimean medal, clasp for Sebastopol."

[PB: Note the Crimea-related street name! 2016: there is little evidence of any remaining Victorian housing in Canrobert Street, which has been extensively redeveloped, except at the north end with high house numbers 56 and upwards.]
