Birth & early life

Born in Brompton, London c.1836

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 28th of June 1854.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Clerk.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Blue eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Sent to Scutari (no date shown) and rejoined the regiment in the Crimea on the 25th of March 1855.

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 24th of December 1855 for "being asleep, on his post." Awarded 84 days imprisonment, with hard labour.

Discharge & pension

Discharged on the "Reduction of the Regiment and being unfit for further military service", from Chatham Invalid Depot on the 9th of November 1856:

"Considered inefficient and the Reduction of the Army. Is of a weak and unhealthy constitution. Frequently suffers from a glandular affection. He is quite unfit for the duties of a soldier and not likely to become effective. – I recommend his discharge."

Served 2 years 51 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 10 months.

Conduct and character: "Bad". Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Aged 20 years 4 months on discharge.

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol and the Turkish medal.
