Private James Hodder – 1808, 13th Light Dragoons




Birth & early life

Born at North Perrot, near Crewkerne, Somerset.


Enlistment

Enlisted at Dorchester on the 28th of February 1855.

Age: 22.

Height: 5' 7”.

Trade: Labourer.

Features: Fair complexion. Blue eyes. Brown hair.


Service, discharge & pension

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 13th of August 1855.

Appears on roll as “Joseph.”

Discharged from Cahir on the 15th of November 1856 upon "Reduction of the Regiment and totally unfit for further service - Suffers from varicose veins in the left leg, the result of constitutional weakness. Suffers from pain and cramp in the leg when riding, and on that account is ineffective as a dragoon. The varicose veins were first noticed about 12 months ago. Is capable of earning his living."

Conduct: "good." Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Served 1 year 261 days, In Turkey and the Crimea, 7 months.

Aged 24 years on discharge.

Granted a pension of 6d. per day for 3 months.


Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol and the Turkish medal.


Life after service

To live at Broadwindsor, Dorset after discharge.

Editor's note: The 1881 Census returns shows a James Hodder aged 48, born at North Perrot a "Coachman Domestic" living at Wilhaye Lane B... House Axminster, Devon. He was married to Maria aged 37 with seven children ages from 17 to 1 years all born in the Somerset and Devon areas.
