Born in Marylebone, London.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 2nd of November 1854.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 5". Trade, Groom.

Service, discharge & pension

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 21st of March 1855.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol and the Turkish medal.

His Crimean medal, with the clasp for Sebastopol and impressed naming, appeared in a Sotheby's auction on the 21st of March 1979 and formed part of a "family group" of medals. His medal was described in the catalogue as being to "C. Hefford. 13th Lancers." [sic]. The other medals were to Battery Sgt. Major C.F. Hefford. R.A. - comprising of the Afghan medal for 1879-79 (no clasp) Egypt 1882, (clasp for Tel-el-Kebir) and the Khedive's Bronze Star for 1882 and the M.S.M. (Edward V11.) and the Long Service & Good Conduct medal (Victoria) to Master Gunner E. Hefford, Coast Brigade R.A.

Master Gunner Edmund Hefford was born in Marylebone, London, and enlisted at Westminster on the 24th of March 1853 at the age of 18 years, being a bootmaker by trade. When discharged at Sandgate Fort on the 11th of May 1875 he had 22 years 476 days service, He had "embarked for active service in the East but returned to England without landing in a foreign country". He had spent 9 years 7 months in India, his conduct being classed as "very good", and possessed the L.S. & G.C medal and the 1st Class Certificate of Education. To live in Bryanston Square, London. He had been twice married, firstly to Emily, by whom he had one child (a son) and secondly to Jane Giggatt, a widow, at Bareillly, India, by whom he had four children, all daughters. It was almost certainly the child of his first marriage, Charles Frederick, born at on the 27th of February 1857, who is the B.S.M. C.H. Heffford of the other group of medals. Edmund Hefford would appear to have been the brother of Charles Hefford of the 13th L.D.

Died, "of disease", in the Regimental Hospital on the 16th of June 1855.
