Master Gunner Edmund Hefford was born in Marylebone, London, and enlisted at Westminster on the 24th of March 1853 at the age of 18 years, being a bootmaker by trade. When discharged at Sandgate Fort on the 11th of May 1875 he had 22 years 476 days service.
He had "embarked for active service in the East but returned to England without landing in a foreign country". He had spent 9 years 7 months in India, his conduct being classed as "very good", and possessed the Long Service & Good Conduct medal and the 1st Class Certificate of Education.
On discharge, he expected to live in Bryanston Square, London.
He had been twice married, firstly to Emily, by whom he had one child (a son) and secondly to Jane Giggatt, a widow, at Bareilly, India, by whom he had four children, all daughters.It was almost certainly the child of his first marriage, Charles Frederick, born at on the 27th of February 1857, who is the B.S.M. C.H. Hefford of the other group of medals. Edmund Hefford would appear to have been the brother of Charles Hefford of the 13th Light Dragoons.
